Rob Forbes, who also founded modern design furniture retailer Design Within Reach, is the man behind PUBLIC Bikes. PUBLIC is a San Francisco-based bicycle and gear company designing urban bikes, along with accessories to make riding more enjoyable, practical, and chic. The European-inspired bikes ride like butter. They come in single and multi-speeds in all sizes. You can dress in casual or business attire, and wear pumps, tennis shoes, or flip flops - just about anything - while riding the bikes. They have baskets, bags and other gear to go along with them. These bikes will make you feel like a kid again, and this is every bit as important as anything else. PUBLIC Bikes & Rickshaw Bagworks Pop-Up Shop
In March of 2011, HOT ITALIAN Midtown launched a pop-up shop for PUBLIC Bikes (PUBLICbikes.com) and Rickshaw Bagworks (rickshawbags.com). PUBLIC Bikes owner Rob Forbes, founder of modern furniture retailer Design Within Reach, and Mark Dwight, former CEO of Timbuk2 Bags and founder of Rickshaw Bagworks, both based in San Francisco, appeared at the launch event. PUBLIC Bikes currently has showrooms in non-bike shops such as The Gap (San Francisco), and Tretorn and J. Crew (New York). HOT ITALIAN is the first restaurant in the country with a PUBLIC pop-up shop.
That night, HOT ITALIAN was also awarded the “Bicycle Friendly Business” award (Bronze level) by the League of American Bicyclists in Washington D.C., becoming the first restaurant in California to achieve this standing.
